Kings St. Kings Lynn wins CIAT architectural award

It was great to hear that this project designed by regular client Studio 11 architecture has just won the prestigious CIAT 2021 Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology, small to medium category. This steel framed building was a built on a compact brown field site overlooking the river Nene in Kings Lynn. The CIAT judges were very complementary about the project saying,

“Built on a plot in the centre of Kings Lynn, overlooking the River Great Ouse, this fantastic solid design, whilst simple, has addressed and tackled issues on a brownfield site. The Chartered Architectural Technologist has successfully created modern living with a twist, with excellent eco-credentials, over and above expectations for a build of this size.

The building has been designed to sit skilfully, and integrate, within the historic context and whilst traditional in its form, exploits the opportunity of modern materials. The site had several constraints and challenges which were taken into careful consideration and profoundly executed. The selection of structural design, materials, size, delivery to site and construction has been expertly reviewed and incorporated within the design, also allowing flexibility for its layout to accommodate any future needs.

This is a superb demonstration of how Architectural Technology has supported the design, making it an outstanding winner for the Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology, small to medium projects category.”

From a photography point of view this was a very complicated shoot to organise. The river would feature in a number of the shots and the Nene at this point ranges from a muddy trickle at low tide to running just below the new building at high tide. Therefore we had to pick a day when the weather was good and the tide was at a suitable level for the day shots and also the shots that Studio 11 wanted at dusk. The client also wanted to drone shots of the building and so a suitable take of point had to be found and permission granted for the drone operation. There’s always a short amount of time for dusk shots due to the rapidly changing light levels and we had about 20 mins to photograph the building front elevation and terrace and then race around to the other side of the river for some long lens shots.
